The Life and Death of Nicholas Cage
This past Saturday the boys woke up at 6 a.m. to take part in the Apple Education Insomnia Film Festival. There were upwards of 2000 highschool and college student applicants pre-registered...although we do not yet know how many actually uploaded finished projects when all was said and done. Filmmakers were given a list of elements and instructed to incorporate 3:
wardrobe: tuxedo
prop: a birdcage
setting: park bench
camera angle: dutch angle
character name: Robin Dejeerling
narrative device: dream sequence
edit: match cut
make up: old man
SFX: static
dialogue: "Don't tempt me."
They had 24 hours to come up with a concept...shoot, score, and edit a three minute short. By 6 a.m. Sunday morning...they had accomplished what they had set out to do....were bleary eyed and not entirely convinced that they weren't completely nutso.
Nutso parents. Nutso kids. What can I say?

What my kids are doing today.... when not being told what to do.
They went into the desert early this morning to find out what had fallen into the trap they had dug.
One stacked tiolet paper rolls and said, "I'm building a pyramid."
And one worked on an original composition for over two hours even though he "has no interest in piano."
The girls played with dolls.
And one designed and stitched together a card holder (library cards, gift cards etc.)
The oldest worked as a P.A. on a promotional film for an architectural firm.

Well, it's official. Not only has Mcabe inherited my intelligence and good looks...but a funky brain as well. One that hangs over his spinal cord a few more millimeters than it should. He's got a lifelong condition like his dear old mom which means coming up with long term pain management strategies..... and I mean this with all of my heart.... after spending 5 hours down at Phoenix Children's Hospital...the Lord is so good to us.

"Yes."
"Well, make a timeline," I suggested.
