Good Places in LA

Monte Carlo's in Burbank.  This is a old fashioned Italian corner market.  They have the BEST deals on pasta.  All sorts of shapes and sizes.  Crazy shapes.

Reality LA

If you are looking for solid Bible teaching...you will find it here.  Hard truths.  Life changing.

( btw....I think it is so LA to have a condom billboard directly under the Hollywood sign and over your kids event...lol)

Fryman Canyon is Zion's favorite canyon to hike.  Especially at sunset.

LACMA ...beautiful grounds.  Completely pleasant.

Gelato Bar & Espresso Cafe  in Studio City has my favorite gelato offerings.  Flavors like Lavender and Chocolate Chile.  This week I had a cup of Lemon Basil and it was to die for good.

Los Angeles Living

I have no idea why we haven't done this yet...but one day I'm gonna pack a picnic and we are gonna hang at the Getty allllllllllll daaaaaaaaaaaaay loooooooooong.  The grounds are beautiful.  I cannot think of a more pleasing spot to do lessons.

The Gabba Gallery

Upper right shot...Zion looked at me and rolled her eyes..."marijuana."

It was sorta obvious.

Whatever.

I love this space.  And the people who run it.  So family friendly.  So generous.  Talkative...not snooty.  Friendly people.

Cafe Gratitude

Super New Agey.  But delish!  I talked with this guy for a bit while Brad was in the restroom.  Very sweet.  Very helpful. Nice smile.

Cashier:  Are you guys Christians?

Brad:  Yeah...wait, How did you know?????  (then)  Oh my tattoo.  (then)  Do you go to Reality?

Cashier:  No.  Mosaic.

Brad:  What's your name?

Cashier:  Conner.

Brad:  I'm Brad.  This is Dawn...Zion and Galilee.

(then)

Me:  I love that there is a believer working here!  Can I take a photo?  I need to document that there is a believer working at Cafe Gratitude.

Cashier:  Sure.

I LOVE THAT THERE IS A BELIEVER WORKING AT CAFE GRATITUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go say "hi" to Conner.

Cherry Pickin'

Villa Del Sol

Julie's parents were dear friends of Brad's parents.  When Brad's family broke up...they stuck with Maureen and the boys.  Bradley hasn't seen Julie in a really long time.

Today we went cherry picking with her and her beautiful family.  Added bonus...they had some friends with them who were also very nice.  What a great way to spend a morning.

We spotted yet another fire as we headed back into town.

Freshly churned Cherry Vanilla Chocolate Chip Ice-Cream is in the freezer.

5 ingredients:  Heavy Cream
                        Organic Sugar
Good Vanilla (that we bought @ a roadside stand on our trip to Grenada)
                        Cherries
                        GF Trader Joe's Choc Chips

We are busting at the seams with cherries over here...even after gifting three neighbor families.  Gotta go on a search for some recipes.

Zion Style

What to wear when one is chopping onions?  Ski goggles of course.

Zion Evangeline has been cooking lots lately.  I figure since she's asking to make meals...I might as well let her.

So like Mcabe was at her age.

Chick-fil-A

Breakfast

Lunch

Dinner

11.6 round trip miles.... three times today.

To be 100% honest...Mcabe had an audition right near there so we went for lunch...but even if there were no reason to be over the hill....we would've gone out of our way.

The staff was awesome!  Super busy and super accommodating.  They genuinely appreciated the support and encouragement.

The protesters were fine during the day...civil and orderly.

Things in Hollywood were getting a little funky as the sun was setting though.  Patrons were being harassed by some who were obviously passionate and wanting to argue.  It was hard to hear them over their combativeness.  Security asked that diners not engage.

Much of what they were shouting were things similar to a facebook post I saw on a friend of a friend's wall...things like...

"I, too, stand with Chic-fil-A in supporting the Bible. That’s why I believe in slavery, think women are sinful by nature and that adulterers should be stoned to death."

My response on facebook....

"What many fail to understand is that slavery in biblical times was very different from the slavery that was practiced in the past few centuries in many parts of the world. The slavery in the Bible was not based exclusively on race. People were not enslaved because of their nationality or the color of their skin. In Bible times, slavery was more a matter of social status. People sold themselves as slaves when they could not pay their debts or provide for their families. In New Testament times, sometimes doctors, lawyers, and even politicians were slaves of someone else. Some people actually chose to be slaves so as to have all their needs provided for by their masters.

The slavery of the past few centuries was often based exclusively on skin color. In the United States, many black people were considered slaves because of their nationality; many slave owners truly believed black people to be inferior human beings. The Bible most definitely does condemn race-based slavery. Consider the slavery the Hebrews experienced when they were in Egypt. The Hebrews were slaves, not by choice, but because they were Hebrews (Exodus 13:14). The plagues God poured out on Egypt demonstrate how God feels about racial slavery (Exodus 7-11). So, yes, the Bible does condemn some forms of slavery. At the same time, the Bible does seem to allow for other forms. The key issue is that the slavery the Bible allowed for in no way resembled the racial slavery that plagued our world in the past few centuries. "

Women are sinful.  Romans 3:23

And...

.....regarding the whole stoning issue.... I linked those interested to this.

I added.....

All this...so you can understand better the mindsets of those who hold to an orthodox understanding of the Bible's teachings. I hope to God that those who have a problem with this info...realize that they have a problem with the Bible first and foremost...before they have a problem with those who believe what it says and attempt to live their lives in light of it's teachings. Failed and flawed as we obviously are.

Then, there was a reporter who asked me a few questions

He seemed like a nice guy and appeared to be genuinely interested.

The bottom line is...I think people want to be understood.  I know I do.

Listening is important.  And discussion is a good thing.

Mark 12
28One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”
29“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.e 30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’f 31The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’g There is no commandment greater than these.”
32“Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. 33To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
34When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.

I think we would agree that we need the Lord's constant help to even attempt coming anywhere near to following the above instructions.

And....for all you health nuts out there who are horrified that we ate fast food three times yesterday....we made wise menu choices and YOLO :)

Roasted Chickpeas/Garbanzo Beans.
You can add any spices you'd like.  I did Salt, Pepper, Garlic, & Curry Powder.

Whole Grain Crackers w/ Trader Joe's Sea Salt Peanut Butter, Honey, Banana, and Sprinkled Flax Seed.

White Bean Pesto Salad.
Drain any white beans you have.  Add spices & fresh herbs...and a spoonful of pesto.  Also some fresh grated cheese if you have it.  Drizzle w/ Olive Oil. You can warm it up for a few moments in a sautee pan...or eat it cold.    Great over pasta too.

I don't care how good the jar of sauce you begin with is...you ALWAYS doctor things up.  Fresh garlic sauteed in olive oil.  Maybe add cooked lentils.  Or white beans or garbanzo beans.  Add sun dried tomatoes and some chicken stock.  Sauteed peppers.  Sauteed onions.  Bacon bits.  A spoonful of sugar.  A can of diced tomatoes or fresh tomatoes.  A pat of butter w/a splash of heavy cream.  White wine.  Red wine.  And always fresh herbs.   It is not okay to serve sauce out of a jar to people you love.

Unless of course you do not have the means to add a little of this or a little of that.

A few green onions...one pearl onion...two springs of oregano and a baby carrot. That's what went into tonight's Pilaf. Trader Joe's Harvest Blend & a package of already cooked lentils. Some seasoning, a bit of olive oil, and lots of garlic. Assembled in one pot on the stove top. Sprinkled w/ bread crumbs and baked till golden.

Made some herbed olive oil for the coming week...planted and picked a flower or two.

It was a great day.

Mother's Day

You can take the family out of BKLYN but you cannot take BKLYN out of the family. We glommed 3 large Pastsy Grimaldi's pizzas and 3 large salads. Might as well have given us straws so we could've inhaled.

I think we should plop here soonish, friends. Pack some lunches and plop.

28 Day Cleanse UPDATE

I have not cheated once and I have 3 days to go. I have been SUPER committed.

Not thrilled with the results. Not worth the $$$$$$$$$$.

Asking for a refund. I am way too thrifty to pay for ehhhhhh.

Cramps...so I am having a few glasses of red wine. Right about now I could care less about the sugar content.

Italian Flag Whole Wheat Shells

Super easy. Super cheap.

1 lb whole wheat pasta (salt the water)
1 bag frozen baby peas (throw them in w/the pasta the last two minutes)
halved cherry tomatoes
fresh cubed mozzarella
drizzle of olive oil
garlic powder to taste
cracked pepper to taste

28 Day Cleanse

I'm about 1/2 way through and I don't see much of a change. It's frustrating but I am committed. Aside from my six years as a vegan...this is the longest stretch I've had on a restricted diet.

I'm not hungry at all. In fact...I'm stuffed. My instinct is to eat less...but everyone I ask tells me to eat. It's counter intuitive.

Protein Smoothies w/ Almond Milk & Mixed Berries and Green Apples.

Blueberries and lots of water.
Brown Rice & Lentil Salad w/ Roasted Poblanos.
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

I'm trying. I'm really trying.

Is my 7 year old weird if she makes this lunch for herself?

Beets, sauteed onions, roasted eggplant & squash.

The next day it was turkey stuffed peppers.

UPDATE:

Day 11 today and I am frustrated. I am not seeing any changes. Have had an underlying headache and I am soooooooo tired at night.

I sure hope there is something fabulous going on inside of me.

I hear things are working on a cellular level.
_______________
So I am doing something RADICAL for me. A 28 day cleanse!

No caffeine. No sugar. No dairy. No gluten. Lots of veggies. Protein. Only berries and green apples fruit wise.

Today is Day 9 and I'm doing well. No cravings.

I'm very curious to see how this affects me over time.
